The Hunt for the Perfect Egg

As Easter approaches, the quest for the perfect egg takes centre stage. While some of us are busy decorating eggs with intricate designs and vibrant colours, there’s another hunt happening on the Sunshine Coast – the hunt for the perfect egg to enter in the Agricultural Show.

Amidst the recent challenge of finding any eggs in the supermarket, backyard chicken owners are encouraged to enter their prized eggs in this prestigious competition.

On Friday, 13th June at 3pm at the Show’s Makers Tent, you can hear from the two highly credentialled judges from the Ekka and view the award-winning entries. Chief Steward for Poultry, Rob Leck, reveals the meticulous process for judging eggs, starting with their external appearance:

Step 1 involves assessing the plate of eggs submitted for judging. The criteria include shape, shell texture, & natural colour/s. Each egg is scrutinized for uniformity and perfection, ensuring that only the finest make it to the next round.

Step 2 focuses on the interior quality of the egg. Here, the criteria include yolk colour, albumen and chalazae quality, and freshness.

Even the most incredible Easter eggs, painted, polished, and encrusted with magnificent decorations, or made from the finest Belgian chocolate or carob would not be in the running. So, if you’re a backyard chicken owner, join the fun and enter your eggs into the competition. You might just find yourself holding the title for the perfect egg on the Sunshine Coast this year. Wouldn’t that be egg-cellent?
