Nambour Lapidary
A bit about us
On Friday the 26 th February, 1965, the late Percy Smith placed an
advertisement in the “ Nambour Chronicle “ newspaper asking if any persons
whose hobby was collecting gem stones, were interested in forming a club.
The response was phenomenal. Held in the ground floor of the canegrowers
building in Lowe Street, Nambour, not only was the room full, but the hallway
as well and even spilling out onto the footpath of Lowe Street. And so on the
2 nd of March, 1965, the Nambour Lapidary Club was born.
After several relocations, the club finally moved into our current location
within the Nambour Showgrounds after being officially opened by Councillor
Eddie De Vere on Show Day, Friday the 13 th June, 1975.
The Nambour Lapidary Club has since grown into a vibrant, friendly club
offering not only lapidary ( the art of cutting and polishing stones ) but also
silver smithing – let’s face it, “ what are you going to do with all of those
beautifully polished stones?” We also offer fossicking field trips several times a
year, both locally and further afield depending on interest.
All potential new members are required to undergo an induction course
under friendly, supportive and knowledgeable supervision to ensure that you
are safe and competent when using the machinery so don’t feel shy about
starting. You will be surprised and delighted with what you can create from a
brown rock!
For more information, come have a chat with one of our members at our
stall in front of our clubhouse during the show. Pick up a brochure with session
time information as well as joining and session fee details.
While there, browse through just a small sample of what we can offer and
maybe let the kids have a fossick in our ever popular “ Fossicking Cart” – the
cheapest fun they’ll have at the show!
We look forward to seeing you there.
